Our Story

In one of the moments when she felt most lost, dance became a refuge for her. It was a space where she could express herself, feel free, and find her way back to herself. That is why, when she imagined the possibility of creating her own academy, she did not want to limit it to teaching steps and technique. She wanted to build a place of peace and harmony, where other people could feel safe to dance, to make mistakes, to grow and, perhaps, to find in dance a refuge of their own.

She also wanted to create a community. One where people could support one another, build bonds, and feel part of something like a family. A space where different disciplines could coexist and enrich one another, because for her dance had always been much more than a single form of movement.

That is how Academia Luz de Luna was born.

The name has an even more personal story. Luz de Luna was born and opened its doors on a January 17, in honor of Evelyn's mother: her Moon.

It was her mother who, from an early age, planted her love of dance and the arts. And when, at some point along the way, Evelyn thought about leaving dance behind, that bond and that memory also became a source of strength to keep going.

That is why Luz de Luna represents the light that remains even when we cannot see it. A light that accompanies you, that guides you, and that reminds you there can always be a reason to keep dancing.

To provide a comprehensive dance education that combines technique, creativity, and expression, guiding each person through a close, respectful, and inclusive learning process. Through movement and dance, we want every member to discover her abilities, strengthen her confidence, and develop tools that can stay with her both inside and outside the academy.

The academy began with barely five people. It was 2022, and the consequences of a pandemic that had transformed everyone's lives —and had hit the art world especially hard— were still being felt. Classes were still held with face masks, and social-distancing measures limited the space and the number of people who could share a studio.

Evelyn arrived at that opening excited, but also nervous. There were many challenges ahead, and starting an artistic project in that context was not easy. But from the beginning there was one thing she was sure of: every year, Luz de Luna would celebrate its anniversary with a different stage production.

She did not want the stage to be merely a showcase of choreography. She wanted those who danced to have the chance to live a scenic process, and those watching to receive something more: a story able to connect with them through dance.

In time, the pandemic began to recede. Spaces could open again, new people arrived, and the academy started to grow. And with that growth, it also began to change.

From those first Jazz and Arabic Dance classes, new paths emerged: Ballet, Salsa, Flexibility and Conditioning, different levels of Arabic Dance, and spaces devoted to choreographic creation. But one of the traits that most sets Luz de Luna apart is not the number of disciplines, but the people who share them.

Its groups bring together different ages and experiences. There are those who arrive very young and grow up inside the academy; those who begin in childhood and continue through adolescence; and those who arrive at other stages of life.

The difference in ages becomes, in this way, a strength.

People learn from one another, support one another, and discover that they do not need to be alike in order to grow together. There is no room to feel more or less than someone because of age, experience, or level. There is empathy. There is support. There is a shared desire to grow together.

And perhaps that is why many people come back.

Because in time, Luz de Luna stops being only a place to dance and starts to feel like a place you want to return to.

It is meeting the same people again, sharing laughter, celebrating small breakthroughs, standing by one another when something is hard, and finding new friendships along the way. It is arriving without knowing anyone and, little by little, feeling that there are already faces waiting for you.

Because dance may be the reason you arrive, but people are often the reason you decide to stay.

To be an academy recognized for its artistic training, its human quality, and its work in scenic creation, becoming a point of reference where technique and artistic sensibility meet to learn, create, tell stories, and stir emotions. We want to build a community where dance leaves a mark both on those who dance it and on those who experience it.

That community is built in many ways. During classes there are activities so people can get to know one another and learn to work as a true ensemble, understanding that dancing together does not only mean performing a choreography at the same time, but listening to one another, watching one another, and building something as a group.

Interpretation is also an important part of the learning. Through theater and different exercises, people explore emotions, characters, and stories, discovering that movement can communicate what is sometimes hard to put into words.

And, every so often, the studio becomes a small space for conversation. In circle time, a single question opens the door for those present to share, listen, and connect from a place of respect and care. Because at Luz de Luna you also learn something that goes beyond dance: being with other people, listening to them, and letting ourselves be heard.

Every anniversary has brought a new stage production and, with it, new challenges. Every production has been different. Each one has demanded learning, adapting, creating, and trusting in collective work. And each one has also left new rewards and memories.

Those stages are a fundamental part of the story of Luz de Luna, because they embody what the academy sets out to do with dance: turn it into an experience that is lived, shared, and remembered.

Today, the academy keeps growing. Some teachers and students have stayed since the earliest years, while new people arrive to begin their own path. And each of them adds something to a story that is still being written.

Because Luz de Luna does not expect a person to arrive already knowing how to dance. It hopes they arrive wanting to.

Here they can make mistakes without fear of being laughed at. They can try again. They can learn from those with more experience and, one day, become someone who inspires those just starting out.

Technique is learned. Movements are refined. Confidence is built. And everything discovered inside the studio can go with you outside it too: discipline, perseverance, expression, teamwork, the ability to trust, and the courage to try something new.

That is why, after so many years, the story of Luz de Luna still has the same starting point: dance as a place to find yourself.

And perhaps now it can also become the place where your own story begins.
